Useful Links

Here are some of my favorite health and active lifestyle websites. There are so many great resources available to us on the internet– unfortunately not all are created equal! Consider a sources’ motivation and credentials before buying into health claims and promises!  For your convenience I’ve also included some sources for buying fitness gear and clothing. They’re companies that I’ve had good experiences with, but of course you be your own judge.   Have fun surfing!

Magazines:

Outside Magazine

A great magazine that focuses on all aspects of an active lifestyle including travel, fitness, environmental issues, fueling your body, sports personalities and lots of other fun stuff. They have an amazing online archive going back 10 years that’s available to even non-subscribers! They also have a Gear Guide and  two Travel issues yearly that are included with your subscription. This is my favorite magazine for it’s interesting variety and quality content!

Her Sports Magazine

This magazine is a little hard to find but worth the search. It’s geared at everyday women athletes who want to know more than how to get a bikini body. Every month they feature detailed training programs for events ranging from 5ks to triathlons, as well information on nutrition, gear and other topics relating to an active lifestyle. Their content is well written & researched and they have a good e-newsletter that highlights stories from the current issue of the magazine. Unfortunately their website doesn’t offer an archive of current or past articles.

Experience Life Magazine

This magazine focuses on living a balanced life at any age. They have well written articles that  cover every type of topic to help one lead a healthy life—mind, body and soul.  They also have an excellent online archive featuring full length articles.

Backpacker Magazine

I always find this magazine inspiring! They show so many beautiful places around the country and around the world to explore that it makes me wish I had a lot more vacation time!  They distribute a California Edition in this area, so you can find plenty of local hikes for a day trip or weekend excursion.

Cooking Light Magazine

If you think that “healthy food” is tasteless & boring, then try out an issue of this magazine. I’ve been cooking from it for years and my whole family loves the things I make. They have a great reference library of recipes online with a great search feature so you can track down what you’re looking for with ease.

National Geographic Adventure

This magazine is similar to Outside but not quite as irreverent. They have a stronger focus on adventure travel and world/environmental issues. This is another magazine that makes you want to pack your bags and get out and explore! Adventure is a top quality magazine with incredible photography in typical National Geographic style.

Shopping:

REI

A great source for gear and clothing for any kind of outdoor pursuit. They have a much bigger selection online than in their stores and you can ship or return merchandise to any of their retail locations with no shipping charges. (Their nearest retail store is in Northridge at Devonshire & Reseda Blvd.) They also have an awesome return policy!

Athleta / Title 9

These companies both feature women’s clothing for  active lifestyles & a variety of sports. They change their offerings with the seasons and offer gear for everything from snowboarding to surfing. They always offer a good selection of yoga/workout clothes and sports bras, and I’ve had good experiences with any returns I’ve had to make. Their full catalogues are featured online.
